Smile! It`s Spring!

Katsuryu laughs with guests during her first Plum Blossom Festival. She has only just begun her first year as a maiko in Kamishichiken district, one of Kyoto's five hanamachi (flower towns, where geisha live and entertain).

We`re having all kinds of incredible adventures in Kyoto, and I`ve taken an insane amount of pictures to prove it! I`ll be back in Gifu this Sunday, so stay tuned for more maiko, geiko, and other Kyoto-riffic goodness!

How old do you think she is? Is there a certain age they start to train or does it just depend on each girl?

Cherry, they have to be 15 years old before they can start their training.

Abbey: ただいま!久しぶりよ!遊ぼう!遊ぼう!I want to hear all about Tokyo yo!

Alyson I took an incredible amount of pictures, although I`m not quite sure one can capture the magic of sakura in Kyoto...

Cherry The laws instituted after the war require girls to graduate from junior high school before officially begining their training, but some girls begin to study dance from a very young age (traditionally, 3 years old). Katsuryu is probably 15 years old now.

Sarie Thank you for leaving a comment!
I`m happy you happened to find my blog, and look forward to reading about your adventures as well! I`ve only just returned from Kyoto, so hopefully some time this week I`ll find the time to do a post about Miyako Odori (^_<)Enjoy the sakura! Kanpai (^-^)/

Lindz You know the only reason he comes back is because he got bitten by the geiko bug (^-^) Its all about the dances. The first time we went to see Miyako Odori with my mother we had to drag him kicking and screaming. Now he doesnt want to do anything else! hehehe...
